Intermediate Budgerigar Breeder
Tim Foddy Budgerigars
When a hobby gets into your ‘bones’, you just can’t leave it alone. That’s how I am with Budgerigars, I first went into Budgie Breeding in 1969 at the age of 12 after asking my Parents for a coup full of Chickens to breed with! Budgies were a way of compromising and keeping the scale on the smaller side. I joined the local Budgie Society as a Junior and tried to improve my stock by using pocket money, Christmas and birthday money and won Best Junior awards at local shows which was very satisfying as my Parents had zero knowledge of Budgies and what I gained was totally down to me as I didn’t have access to birds from other Family members. All went well until I reached the age of 18 when things like Work, Girls and Beer took over and I stopped keeping Budgies.
Rolling on for the best part of 25 years and I began to think that I needed a hobby to get away from the stresses of work and before I knew it I was back into breeding and showing Budgies.
Again, over the course of several years I managed to build up a good standard of birds and had pleasing success on the show bench which included winning many CC’s, a couple of Best in Shows and producing several Champion birds. Life is never simple, and for Personal reasons I had to sell up and I went into another ‘no Budgie’ period.
In 2007 I started from scratch again! Another new shed, more new birds and another period of gathering equipment together and trying to persuade birds to breed that have other ideas! I have now completed my 5th breeding season and I am beginning to see ‘the wood for the trees’. This season I moved into a purpose built Bird room that was completed 2 months after I had hoped and as such the birds had no time to settle in before being asked to breed, this did not help as I struggled to get numbers up for the first couple of months of the season, but in the end I am satisfied that I have produced enough young birds to make progress.
